This 1972 BMW 3.0 CSL 3.5L 5-Speed is one of 169 built during its first-series production. It’s a rare classic sportscar and is still in pristine condition. It was completed on February 25, 1972, delivered new to Italy in July 1972, and may have been imported to the US later in the decade.

In 1986, a Colorado collector acquired the BMW, who commissioned a refurbishment in the mid-1990s. The car stayed in the family until 2014 when it was acquired by a San Francisco collector.

Still a classic, but with a touch of modern

While still sporting its classic features, it has been treated with some modern updates as well. The BMW is fitted with a more powerful 3.5-liter M30 inline-six with twin Weber carburetors. The engine is said to be from a 1985 BMW. It was installed during the 1990s refurbishment along with the carburetors.

However, the original carbureted 3.0-liter engine is included with the sale of the car as well. The 1990s refurbishment also included a repaint from Golf Yellow to black with tri-color stripes. The “Batmobile” aerodynamic conversion kit is another new feature. This kit adds a rear wing and roof spoiler as well as a front air dam and rubber air guides on the front fenders.

The BMW also has a later-style steel truck panel with a plastic lip, but the factory aluminum panel is also included in the sale. The car sits on a set of factory 14-inch Alpina alloy wheels wearing 205/70 Michelin XWX tires that were added by the seller in 2019. The trunk compartment has a matching Alpina spare wheel along with a jack and tire iron.

The interior features front and rear Scheel bucket seats with black leatherette trimming and corduroy inserts. There’s also a set of custom, vintage-style silver and black Coco mats. A wood dash surround and other classic details like a large thin steering wheel along with retro dials round out the car’s vintage aesthetic. Buy Here
