Converse Returns to Basketball with the All Star Pro BB

Wilt Chamberlin, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Chuck Taylor. What do all these names have in common? For one, they’re some of the greatest basketball players of all time. They also all had the same taste in shoes. Game after game these players laced up Converse before hitting the court. Nowadays Nike, Air Jordan, Adidas, or Under Armour basketball shoes cover the court. Long gone are the days where there would be 10 players all wearing the same shoe. But these days could be returning, as Converse is making a comeback to the basketball shoe game with their All Star Pro BB.

Deep Rooted Basketball History Ready to Re-Surface

When most people think of basketball shoes they typically think of brands like Nike or Under Armour. It’s easy to see why; nearly every NBA player wears the same 4 or 5 brands. However, Converse has a deeper and longer history with basketball than almost any other brand. Their first basketball shoe came out over a century ago- in 1917 to be exact. In 1922 they upgraded this shoe with the help of professional player, Chuck Taylor. He helped them design a more supportive and flexible sneaker.

With all the help and support from Chuck Taylor, they decided to add his signature tot he heel of the shoe, which are now commonly known as Chuck Taylor All Stars. Nearly 80% of the NBA were laced up in Converse basketball shoes by the 1960s. In the ’70s they started to decline in popularity. They made a slight comeback in the ’80s, but were never as popular again.

For the past few decades there hasn’t been any Converse shoes in the basketball world. However, that is all about to change. In collaboration with some of Nikes legendary team (whom Converse is a subsidiary of), they have created a great basketball sneaker again. Taking inspiration from past shoe designs, the new All Star Pro BB are not only making their debut but their return to courts everywhere.

Sneaker Specs of the All Star Pro BB

Converse’ design has always followed the same basic principle of simplicity. Making a simple and clean looking shoe actually stands out these days. Many companies try too hard to recreate the shoe and end up with designs that are far too busy and complicated. As the age old saying goes, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it- and the Converse design certainly ain’t broke. The new Pro BB has obvious similarities to all of the classic shoes, including the legendary Chuck Taylors.

However, they are most similar to the Converse Pro Leather shoe. It’s a mostly one colored shoe, with the same large All Star logo the Pro Leathers’ had. The large star set inside the thick angled line is a classic logo and suits the new shoe incredibly well. However, the shoe pays homage to the Chuck Taylors that nearly started it all. On the inside face of the shoe, the Star enclosed in a circle emblem is displayed as well; which is the same logo on the Taylors.

Minimal Design, Not Minimal Performance

The minimalistic design of the new shoe makes it very supportive and sturdy, all while still being lightweight. Without lots of overlapping material, straps, buttons, or excessive design features the shoe is able to all be one piece up top. The whole top portion that holds your foot secure is nestled into the rubber sole to grip the wooden court. With classic All Star design and the functionality and fit you’ve come to expect from modern Nike sneakers, this shoe is unique and ready to shoot, run, and leap across the hardwood yet again.

The biggest name in classic basketball footwear makes its way back into the basketball sneaker game. The all new Converse All Star Pro BB is the best of Converse simplicity and Nike performance. This modern interpretation of the old school shoe is sure to be a hit when it releases later this year. Learn More
