Tesla is all things innovative and eccentric. When you’re thinking of what ingenious inventions Elon Musk has up his sleeve, you’re picturing the next SUV or successor to the Cybertruck. But the newest release from the electric car and solar power company is superbly different from their usual repertoire. Tesla recently released a $250 tequila, which started out as an April Fool’s Day joke. The product, which was then called “Teslaquila,” was shown in a picture on the joke day in 2018. The tweet was that Tesla had gone bankrupt and Musk was passed out against a Tesla Model 3 with bottles of “Teslaquila” surrounding him. Who knew that joke would become a reality? Later into the year, Tesla actually filed an application to trademark “Teslaquila.”
A little bit of spice and everything nice
The name was short lived and not meant to be. The Consejo Regulador del Tequila (CRT) however opposed the “Teslaquila” moniker. They stated that the name was “unauthorized use of the denomination of origin for Tequila.” So with that name scratched, what is now called Tesla Tequila came to be. The small-batch premium spirit comes in a hand blown lightning bolt-shaped bottle, which isn’t surprising in any way for Tesla.
Produced by agave spirits brand Nosotros Tequila, the tequila is made from sustainably sourced highland and lowland agaves. The 40% ABV tequila was aged in French oak barrels for 15 months. Flavors include dry fruit and light vanilla with a cinnamon pepper finish. Tesla notes that it is best enjoyed as a sipping tequila, so save your shots for another brand.
Released on November 5, the tequila was limited to two bottles per person. Launched that evening, it was sold out by the next morning. Priced at $250 each, bottles of the spirit have skyrocketed in price on storefronts like eBay. Some bottles are going as high as $2.5k! Even empty bottles are selling, which makes what was once an April Fool’s joke look like a very well thought-out marketing success. Buy Here
